The tornado that touched down just before sunset Friday (June 1) and carved a nearly four-mile path through the city's waterfront neighborhoods caused more than $4.3 million in damage, according to city estimates Saturday afternoon. People took shelter in basements, bathrooms and in one case the bowels of a tall ship docked in the Hampton River as the storm passed within yards of several outdoor events. No major injuries were reported as of late Saturday. The tornado, an EF1 according to the National Weather Service, made landfall along Chesapeake Avenue and continued northeast, splitting trees and damaging boats, businesses and homes in its path. An EF1 is the second-lowest on a six-point scale used to measure a tornado's intensity. By the time the tornado's 98 mph winds dissipated, as many as 5,700 Dominion Virginia Power customers were without power and localized flooding was being reported from heavy rains.
