-- The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry...The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. ꕥ Psalm 34:15,17-19 ꕥ

Alison, Precisely my earlier point re your post on the formation of para-military police units formed at Pendleton. We all know that the police have a tendency for over-kill as soon as a crowd forms. This is particularly so if the crowd happens to comprise what the the police might term a 'scruffy lot'. It tends to quickly make the police feel powerless and threatened. This can quickly lead to hasty, ill-conceived actions as they attempt to assert control. Can you imagine the impact of 3 Battaltions of para military marines turned loose to deal with some urban upset that the police feel powerless to control. Need I remind you of the dogs and the guns at a certain university a few decades ago? A battalion carries a complement of 800 here in OZ. I don't know how many are in a marine battalion? But can you imagine 4800 boots at the trot, led by armoured personnel carriers carrying crowd control ordnance? The hair comes up on the back of your neck thinking about it. There are times when both police and the military must be heavy handed but the line between control and unrestrained legalised mayhem is thin and takes a group of very level-headed officers and nco's to keep the lid on containment. When someone panics and calls, ********* AND UNLEASH THE DOGS OF WAR!' things can get pretty damned awful, very quickly.

Hmmn...the site rules appear to have forbidden me to indicate that famous Shakespearian quotation.
