The US Geological Survey (USGS) has registered an earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale in Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean.

The strong quake occurred at 11:08 pm local time (1008 GMT) 78 kilometers from the town of Neiafu, on the south coast of the island Vava'u.

The epicenter of the tremor was 280 kilometers north of the capital Nuku'alofa.

The USGS had earlier announced that a 6.7-magnitude tremor jolted the region, but later revised the magnitude down to 6.4.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said in a statement that the quake did not generate a tsunami.

There have been no immediate reports of possible damage or causalities.
